Rose Tobias Shaw

Rose Tobias Shaw was a British-born casting director best known for working on the UK television show The Prisoner and Martin Scorsese’s 1988 film The Last Temptation of Christ.

She is also credited with boosting the career of Pierce Brosnan by helping him land a starring role in the 1981 miniseries The Manions of America, an epic three-part series about an Irish farmer who migrates to America. Shaw had seen Brosnan in the previous year’s film The Long Good Friday, in a part that lasted less than a minute.

Additionally, Shaw worked on the television series Matlock, Dark Shadows, Espionage, Court Martial, Secret Agent, Man in a Suitcase, Strange Report, From a Bird’s Eye View and Covington Cross.

She also worked on many television movies and miniseries, earning her the nickname “The Queen of the Miniseries,” and contributed to casting for Space, which starred James Garner and was nominated for three Emmys; Thirteen at Dinner; Out on a Limb, a miniseries that starred Shirley MacLaine and was nominated for three Emmys; The Two Mrs. Grenvilles, nominated for eight Emmys; Queenie; Voice of the Heart; The Count of Monte-Cristo; S.O.S. Titanic; The Bunker with Anthony Hopkins; The Scarlet Pimpernel, starring Anthony Andrews, Jane Seymour and Ian McKellen; Nairobi Affair, with Charlton Heston; Arthur the King; Monte Carlo, with Joan Collins; The Bourne Identity miniseries, with Richard Chamberlain; Around the World in 80 Days, with Pierce Brosnan; and Till We Meet Again, starring Hugh Grant.

Shaw died October 27, 2015. She was 96.
