Robert Getchell was a writer best known for his Oscar-nominated and BAFTA-winning work on the 1974 film Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, starring Ellen Burstyn and Kris Kristofferson, and directed by a young Martin Scorsese. Burstyn played Alice Hyatt, a recently widowed struggling singer who goes on the road with her young son.

Getchell was nominated for an Oscar once again two years later for his adaptation of Bound for Glory. He also helped pen the script for Mommie Dearest, starring Faye Dunaway; as well as Sweet Dreams, with Jessica Lange and Ed Harris; Stella, starring Bette Midler; Point of No Return, starring Bridget Fonda; This Boy’s Lie, with Robert De Niro, Leonardo DiCaprio and Ellen Barkin; and The Client, starring Susan Sarandon and Tommy Lee Jones.

Getchell also created the long-running, Linda Lavin-starring CBS sitcom Alice, spawned from Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, and the series Flo, based on another prominent character from the film.

Getchell died October 21, 2017. He was 81.
