Nelsan Ellis was an actor and playwright best known for his role as Lafayette Reynolds in the HBO series True Blood, a role he played from 2008 until the series' completion in 2014, and for starring as Bobby Byrd in the 2014 James Brown biopic Get on Up.

Ellis also had roles on the series The Inside, Veronica Mars, Without a Trace and Elementary.

Additionally, he appeared in the films The Express, The Soloist, Secretariat, The Help, Lee Daniels’ The Butler and The Stanford Prison Experiment.

Ellis died of heart failure on July 8, 2017, in Los Angeles. He was 39.
