Martin Messinger

Martin Messinger was an executive for CBS Corporation and Westinghouse Broadcasting (Group W), where he provided counsel and representation over a 36-year career.

He grew up in Queens, New York, and earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Bridgeport and his juris doctorate from St. John's University School of Law. He was admitted to the New York Bar in 1975 and practiced corporate law at the Wall Street law firm Sullivan & Cromwell.

In 1978 Messinger joined Group W, where he ultimately became vice president and general counsel. Following the merger of Westinghouse and CBS, he joined the CBS law department in 1996. He played a key role in that merger and others, including the union of CBS and Infinity Broadcasting.

He had served as senior vice president and deputy general counsel for CBS since 1996; and chief legal officer for the CBS Television Stations group since the division was formed in 2000. He also served as CBS’s first chief compliance officer, a position he held for four years, following the company’s separation from Viacom in 2005.

Messinger died July 19, 2015, in East Hampton, New York. He was 66.
