Lawrence Hamilton was a singer and actor best known for his work on the stage, which included a starring role in the Broadway production of Ragtime and several other musicals.
Born in small-town Arkansas, Hamilton developed a love of music as a child when he studied piano from a teacher who had been a friend of ragtime legend Scott Joplin. After receiving a degree in music at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, he went to work as a performer at Walt Disney World. A chance spotting by a talent manager led to a small role in the Broadway musical Timbuktu, starring Eartha Kitt.

His other stage credits included Broadway productions of Jelly's Last Jam and The Wiz, as well as many regional productions. He also spent three years on tour with New Kids on the Block, for whom he worked as a vocal and dance coach.
In addition to his theater work, Hamilton appeared in the television movies Purlie, The Riddle of the Stinson and We Shall Not Be Moved.
Hamilton died April 4, 2014, in New York City. He was 59.
