Joseph T. Naar

Joseph T. Naar was a talent agent who went on to become a successful producer of both feature films and television series, including the popular 1970s cop drama Starsky and Hutch.

A southern California native, Naar was a star running back on the Los Angeles High football team and was playing for UCLA when he left school to join the Navy during World War II. After three years of service in the South Pacific, he returned to UCLA and played in the 1947 Rose Bowl against Illinois.

After college Naar went to work at the William Morris Agency and eventually represented such stars as Peter Lawford, Steve McQueen, Ali MacGraw, Raquel Welch and Marilyn Monroe.

After several years as an agent he moved into television as a producer of General Electric Comedy Hour, Lux Playhouse and Checkmate. He also produced movies, including the boxing drama The All American Boy, starring Jon Voight, and two thrillers, Blacula and Scream Blacula Scream, which melded horror and the blaxploitation genre of the early '70s.

Later, returning to television, Naar produced three more series: Starsky and Hutch, Strike Force and Half Nelson.

Naar died January 17, 2014. He was 88.
