Jonathan Crombie

Jonathan Crombie was a Canadian actor best known for his role as caring and intelligent Gilbert Blythe, the love interest in the Anne of Green Gables miniseries and television movies.

He was discovered by casting director Diane Polley (mother of actress Sarah Polley, star of Avonlea) while performing in a high school production of The Wizard of Oz. The serendipitous meeting led to the role of Gilbert when he was 19 years old. Opposite Megan Follows as the title character, Crombie played the lovable character in the CBC TV miniseries Anne of Green Gables in 1985, and the television movies Anne of Avonlea in 1987 and Anne of Green Gables: The Continuing Story in 2000, as well as a 1992 episode of Avonlea, a television series about a girl who is sent to live in a small farming town with her relatives.

Crombie’s other work in television included roles on the series Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Knightwatch, Deadly Nightmares, 21 Jump Street, Class of '96 and Earth: Final Conflict. He made his finall appearance in an episode of The Good Wife, in which he played a police inspector.
