Emory Bass was a stage and screen actor best known for his role as Judge James Wilson in both the original stage musical 1776 and its 1972 film adaptation. The film was nominated for a Golden Globe for best musical/comedy, as well as an Academy Award for cinematography.
On television, Bass had a recurring role on the sitcom Angie, starring Donna Pescow. On the program, he played Phipps, the Benson family butler. He also had small roles in episodes of Kojak, The Jeffersons, Hart to Hart, Three’s Company, Simon & Simon, Silver Spoons, Dynasty, Mr. Belvedere, Webster and Murder, She Wrote.
Bass appeared on Broadway in Terrence McNally’s Bad Habits and in revivals of Kiss Me Kate, Pal Joey, Lysistrata and Irene, starring Debbie Reynolds. He was in road productions of Glad Tidings with Tallulah Bankhead, Everybody Loves Opal with Nancy Walker, Time Out for Ginger with Art Carney and Woman of the Year with Lauren Bacall.
