Edwin Sherin was a producer and director best known for helming The Great White Hope on Broadway, and producing more than 150 episodes of the television series Law & Order.

Sherin also served as director on Law & Order, as well as episodes of the series Hill Street Blues, Moonlighting, Tour of Duty, L.A. Law, Doogie Howser, M.D., Homicide: Life on the Street, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Medium and The Black Donnellys.

Additionally, Sherin directed the original production of the Howard Sackler play The Great White Hope, starring James Earl Jones, which won a Pulitzer Prize and the Tony Award for best play.

Sherin joined the DGA in 1969, and went on to serve on the guild’s National Board for 15 years, including three terms as national vice president from 1997 to 2003.

He was nominated for nine Emmy Awards, and won one in 1997 for his work as a producer on Law & Order.

Sherin died May 4, 2017, in Nova Scotia, Canada. He was 87.
