Bill Arhos

Bill Arhos was a producer best known for creating Austin City Limits, the longest-running music show in American television history. He produced the show from the first broadcast in 1974 featuring Willie Nelson until his retirement in 1999.

Arhos began his career at Austin television station KLRU in 1961, and eventually became the station manager. In 1974 he created Austin City Limits, which was recorded live in Austin, Texas, and aired locally and throughout the PBS system. The show was the inspiration for the capital’s annual Austin City Limits Music Festival. He also served on the boards of PBS and the Country Music Association; he was also inducted into the inaugural class of the Austin City Limits Hall of Fame, alongside Willie Nelson and Stevie Ray Vaughan. In 1996 Arhos also served as the executive producer of the television movie documentary A Tribute to Stevie Ray Vaughan.

ACL also made an impression on the Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl when he was a child, leading him as an adult to record parts of the band’s Sonic Highways LP at the famed venue. In addition, they recorded a track at KLRU-TV Studio 6A, the original home of Austin City Limits.

Arhos died April 11, 2015, in Austin, Texas. He was 80.
