Angela Paton was an actress best known for her role in 1993’s Groundhog Day, starring Bill Murray. Paton played Mrs. Lancaster, the elderly innkeeper who hosted Murray’s character Phil on his never-ending day.

Paton’s first movie role came with 1971’s Dirty Harry, starring Clint Eastwood; her part as a homicide detective was uncredited. Paton also appeared in the films Flatliners, starring Kiefer Sutherland, Kevin Bacon, and Julia Roberts; Clean Slate, starring Dana Carvey; Blue Sky, with Jessica Lange and Tommy Lee Jones; Trapped in Paradise, with Nicolas Cage, Jon Lovitz, and Carvey; Eye for an Eye, with Sally Field, Sutherland, and Ed Harris; The Wedding Singer, starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore; Joe Dirt, starring David Spade; and The United States of Leland, with Ryan Gosling, Don Cheadle, and Kevin Spacey.

Paton began appearing on television in 1988, with a part in the telefilm Winnie. She went on to roles on the series Thirtysomething, Dear John, Falcon Crest, Hunter, The Wonder Years, Quantum Leap, Wings, L.A. Law, Murphy Brown, Doogie Howser, M.D., Nurses, Star Trek: Voyager, NYPD Blue, Picket Fences, The Client, Home Improvement, ER, Cybill, Caroline in the City, Chicago Hope, Dharma & Greg, Boston Public, The X-Files, Becker, JAG, Numb3rs, Curb Your Enthusiasm, My Name Is Earl, Medium and Grey’s Anatomy.

Most of Paton’s credits came after she was already in her late fifties. Prior to that, she had a stage career based mostly in the San Francisco Bay Area. She also founded a theater in Berkeley and in 2012 she appeared in the Broadway revival of Harvey.

Paton died May 26, 2016, in Oakland, California. She was 86.
