The Facts: CBS and the Television Academy, Time-Shifting and the 61st Primetime Emmys Awards Show

Of the 28 Primetime Emmy Awards given during the September 20 ceremony, all writing, directing, performing and program awards will remain on air.

Of the 28 Primetime Emmy Awards given during the September 20, 2009, ceremony, all writing, directing, performing and program awards traditionally included in the annual telecast will remain on air.

Eight of those Primetime Emmy Award categories will be presented between 4:20 p.m. and 5 p.m. on September 20:

    Directing for a Variety, Music or Comedy Series

    Directing for a Miniseries or a Movie

    Writing for a Drama Series

    Writing for a Miniseries or a Movie

    Made for Television Movie

    Miniseries

    Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie

    Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or a Movie

These awards will:

  • be presented in front of the entire Primetime Emmy audience of nominees and television professionals in full production conditions

  • be tightened to reduce the time of Emmy recipients walking down the aisles to the stage, up the steps, and waiting for their winning teammates to assemble on stage

  • include a visual and verbal announcement of all nominees in each category

  • include reaction shots of the winning nominee(s) when their name is read

  • include winner acceptance speeches, which will be tightened to highlight spontaneous remarks and actions with dramatic and comic impact

  • air during in the final half of the telecast, providing sufficient time to edit and integrate them back into the show
