Michael Spiller

Raised in Brooklyn NY, Michael Spiller followed a lifelong love of movies and television to SUNY Purchase where he received a BFA in film. Working his way up the ranks in NYC after graduation eventually led to a successful career as a director of photography shooting features, TV, documentaries, commercials, and music videos all over the globe. After serving as DP on the first season of HBO's Sex and the City, Spiller launched his directing career in that series' 2nd season, and went on to direct seven episodes before moving to LA in 2001, and hanging up his light meters to direct full time.

Spiller continued to direct some of the most successful shows on TV. His credits include more than 20 episodes each of Modern Family and Scrubs, as well as multiple episodes of Superstore, Black-ish, The New Girl, The Middle, Cougar Town, Bernie Mac, Big Love, Don't Trust the B in Apt 23, Better Off Ted and Ugly Betty, and was pilot and series main director for Jake in Progress and Big Day. He has served as Executive Producer/Director on The Mindy Project for all six seasons, and has just finished directing his 30th episode of the series. He directed the pilot and is Executive Producing Champions, a new show from Mindy Kaling and Charlie Grandy for NBC.

In 2011, Michael Spiller won both an Emmy Award and a Directors Guild of America (DGA) Award for his work as a director on Modern Family, and he was nominated for a DGA Award again in 2012.
