TELEMUNDO KVEA 52'S "MEJORANDO SU VIDA" RECIPIENT OF ACADEMY OF TELEVISION ARTS & SCIENCES LOS ANGELES AREA GOVERNORS AWARD

North Hollywood, CA, July 12, 2007 – Telemundo KVEA 52's "Mejorando Su Vida" will be the recipient of the prestigious Los Angeles Area Governors Award, it was announced today by Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Chairman Dick Askin.

The Governors Award, which honors broadcasting achievement in the Los Angeles market, will be presented at the Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards on August 25 at the Television Academy's Leonard H. Goldenson Theatre.

“KVEA 52 is doing a tremendous job providing important information and services to the Latino community through ’Mejorando Su Vida’,” said Askin. “We are very pleased that the Academy’s Board of Governors voted to bestow this honor on a news outlet that educates and effects positive change in the community.”

KVEA 52's mission for the first half of this decade has been to help Southern California’s community of immigrants improve their lives. The station has captured this idea through the phase "Mejorando Su Vida" (Improving Your Life). Currently, "Mejorando Su Vida" is a dynamic part of the station’s morning, evening and late night newscasts. In addition, KVEA 52 created an innovative late night newscast called "En Contexto" which reports, explains and analyzes issues on a local, regional and international scale.

KVEA 52’s “Mejorando Su Vida” initiative has led to the station’s partnering with multiple public agencies over a range of issues. They support the Los Angeles Unified School District by providing basic information about how parents can access schools and participate as full partners in the education of their children. Ultimately, parents learn how to understand curriculums and report cards and work with school administrators.

One of the relationships that has been beneficial for KVEA-52’s viewers was with First 5 LA whose mission was to improve the first five years of life for children in Los Angeles. KVEA 52 worked with First 5 LA to bring stories about free or low cost family services to viewers. As a result, tens of thousands of families were able to secure health care services at low or no cost.
In 2005, KVEA 52 worked with the American Red Cross and launched the most successful blood drive targeting Latino donors and the partnership has become an annual commitment. In addition, under the banner of “Mejorando Su Vida,” KVEA 52 has supported various citizenship campaigns aimed at increasing the number of registered voters.
