KCBS2/KCAL9 Top L.A. Area Emmys— Freberg Accepts Governors Award

KCBS2/KCAL9 topped the honorees at the 58th Annual Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards with eight statuettes, followed by FOX11 and KCAL9, which won five each. A highlight of the festivities was the presentation of the prestigious Governors Award to Stan Freberg, an entertainment industry legend with deep roots in Los Angeles broadcasting.

The ceremony, hosted by Keith Olbermann of MSNBC’s Countdown with Keith Olbermann, took place at the Leonard H. Goldenson Theater on the grounds of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in North Hollywood. The evening’s presenters included James Avery, Tai Babilonia, Oksana Baiul, Danny Bonaduce, Nancy Cartwright, Ana Garcia, Steve Garvey, John Henson and Alan Thicke. The event was streamed via live webcast at the Television Academy’s official website, www.emmys.com; an archived version will be available on the site beginning Monday, August 14.

For the third consecutive year, FOX11 News at 10 took the award for outstanding regular newscast over 35 minutes, and KCBS News at 11 was named outstanding regularly scheduled newscast in the 0-35 minute format. KTLA Morning News won the award for outstanding regularly scheduled daytime newscast.

Freberg, a veteran actor, writer, director, producer, composer, lyricist, humorist, author and advertising visionary, was introduced by Nancy Cartwright, the well-known voice-over performer who provides the voice of Bart Simpson on the long-running Fox animated series The Simpsons. In her remarks, Carwright recalled her first meeting with Freberg, himself a renowned voice performer among his numerous other achievements, more than 20 years ago.

A videotape segment of clips from Freberg’s 62-year show-business career reminded the audience that he is also founding member of the Television Academy and the recipient of three Emmys for his work on the groundbreaking puppet series Time for Beany, which premiered on KTLA in 1949. Freberg’s wife, Hunter, who also spoke briefly prior to his arrival at the podium, related an amusing anecdote about Time for Beany’s unlikely popularity with Albert Einstein, who watched it faithfully when he was teaching at Caltech.

Freberg, 80, then took the stage with a green hand puppet named Orville, with whom he shared lively banter that quickly had the audience laughing, confirming that his vocal skills and comic timing are as sharp as ever. He moved on to share several reminiscences from his illustrious career, and even sang a portion of a song from a forthcoming recording to be titled Songs in the Key of Freberg.

When Freberg left the stage he received a standing ovation from the crowd, which included actress and Television Academy governor Kathryn Joosten, who won an Emmy last year as outstanding guest actress in a comedy series for her work on ABC’s Desperate Housewives, as well as actor Jon Cryer, who is nominated this year for outstanding actor in a comedy series for his performance on the CBS sitcom Two and a Half Men.

Among the evening’s other winners, KCBS2/KCAL9, FOX11 and KCAL9 were followed by FSN West, KTLA5 and NBC4 with four Emmys each; CBS2 received three; KCET, KMEX, KOCE, KVEA and LA CITYVIEW35 took two each; and ABC7, BTV6, CITYTV of Santa Monica and KWHY earned one each.

An edited version of the show will be broadcast Saturday, August 26, at 9:00 p.m. on KTLA 5.
