Chris Economaki, Top Auto Racing Announcer

In a career spanning 40 years, Economaki covered the Indianapolis 500, Daytona 500 and many other races for ABC, CBS and ESPN.

Chris Economaki, an auto racing announcer known as "The Dean of American Motorsports," died September 28, 2012, in New Jersey. He was 91.

A native of Brooklyn, New York, Economaki first worked as a track announcer and editor of National Speed Sports News. A major opportunity was presented when William France, founder of NASCAR, recommended that Economaki call ABC's first motorsports broadcast, the Firecracker 250 at Daytona International Speedway.

Economaki went on to become the leading voice of auto racing, and an authority recognized throughout the world.

He worked for ABC, notably for its award-winning series Wide World of Sports, before moving on to CBS, and later to ESPN.
