Chad Everett, Star of 70s Drama Medical Center and More

Everett starred as surgeon Dr. Joe Gannon on the CBS series, then went on to appear in numerous other shows over the course of 30-plus years.

Chad Everett, a major television star in the 1970s as one of the stars of the CBS drama Medical Center, died July 24, 2012, at his home in Los Angeles.

According to news reports, the cause was lung cancer.

Everett enjoyed a career that spanned more than three decades, but he remains best known for the role of Medical Center’s Dr. Joe Gannon, a handsome and sensitive surgeon. For his performance on the show, which aired from 1969-1976, Everett garnered two Golden Globe nominations,

Born Raymon Lee Cramton on June 11, 1936, in South Bend, Indiana, he graduated from Wayne State University in Michigan before moving to Los Angeles, where was signed a contract with MGM.

He made his TV debut in 1961 on the western hit Maverick. Other guest roles in the ensuing years included 77 Sunset Strip, Surfside 6, Hawaiian Eye, Route 66, Branded, Combat!, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., The FBI, Ironside, Police Story, Hotel, Murder, She Wrote, Caroline in the City, Cybill, Melrose Place and Cold Case. His last guest appearance came in a 2012 episode of the ABC drama Castle.

In addition to Medical Center, he costarred in the miniseries Centennial, and was a series regular on The Dakotas, Hagen, The Rousters, McKenna, Manhattan, AZ and Chemistry.

His feature films included Get Yourself a College Girl, The Chapman Report, The Singing Nun, The Firechasers, The Jigsaw Murders, Fever Pitch, Airplane 2: The Sequel, Mulholland Drive and Psycho.

Survivors include a sister, two daughters and six grandchildren. His wife of 45 years, actress Shelby Grant, died last year.
