Director Dave Powers Dies

Carol Burnett Show director won four Primetime Emmys


Dave Powers, a prolific director who won four Primetime Emmys for his work on The Carol Burnett Show, July 3 at the age of 75.

Powers, who became a member of the Directors Guild of America in 1956, remained a member for 52 years.

He began his career at CBS, where he worked as a stage manager and associate director for many years. He joined The Carol Burnett Show as a director in 1968, and held that position for 10 years, during which he garnered seven Primetime Emmy nominations and won four — in 1974, 1975, 1977 and 1978.

In addition to her variety series, Powers directed Burnett in the special Sills and Burnett at the Met, with Beverly Sills, for which he was nominated for another Emmy, as well as Julie and Carol at Lincoln Center, with Julie Andrews.

Powers also directed several series, including more than 40 episodes of Three’s Company. Others included The Ropers, Mama’s Family, The Jon Davidson Show, The Jimmy Rogers Show and The Kelly Monteith Show.
