Haynes Johnson, Award-Winning Journalist and Television Commentator
In addition to distinguished career as a newspaperman, John became a familiar face on various news and public-affairs TV shows.
Haynes Johnson, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, author and television commentator died May 24, 2013, in Bethesda, Maryland. He was 81.
According to news reports, the cause was a heart attack.
Johnson, who was bet known for his association with The Washington Post, joined the paper in 1969. He worked as a writer, editor and columnist and retired in 1994. Prior to the Post, he was a reporter at The Washington Evening Star, where he won the 1966 Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting for coverage of the civil rights movement in Selma, Alabama, and its aftermath.
On television, Johnson was a member of the original panel of the PBS program Washington Week in Review and often appeared on PBS’s NewsHour With Jim Lehrer on NBC's Today show.
